Give the Stig a Toyota GR Supra and He'll Start Drifting It Up the Road

They've given the Stig another go up the Longcross hill, this time in the brand new Toyota GR Supra. Coming right after the replica Aston Martin stunt, the Supra does benefit from a more modern drivetrain, but it's heavier than the James Bond vehicle.

While the MK IV Supra is, without doubt, the better known and even worshipped version of the Supra, the name has been around for over four decades now, going as far back as 1978! Fans have been screaming for a new model for more than a decade now, and when Toyota finally came up with the MK V, not everyone was happy with the outcome.

"It's a BMW," they said. "It's not a Supra anymore," they said. I wonder how many times Toyota has had to deal with voices like these in the past, when launching previous versions of its sports car. People will always have different opinions, and that's ok.

Nissan has the GT-R, Toyota has the Supra, and Acura has brought back the NSX. Only a replacement for the RX-7 is still missing, but otherwise we are living some exciting times, albeit the apparent dawn of the internal combustion engine era.

Anyway, the Stig doesn't seem to mind being used as a human guinea pig to figure out which of these cars have got the best drifting capabilities in stock form. As expected, he proceeds to slide the 335 bhp, twin-turbo Supra up the hill with ease.

Sure, it may not look or sound as impressive as the show's previous V8 tests, but just imagine the possibilities of building the Toyota Supra into an actual drift car, should you be aiming in that direction.

Daigo Saito and a few other top-level drifters have already gone down that path, and we're bound to see more of these actively competing over the next few years. Alas, it looks like the producers have still got a few more interesting cars coming up, with an Alpine A110 and another Mercedes being on that list.
