Gigi Dall'Igna Starts Working on the All-New Ducati MotoGP Bike

Great news (so far) comes from Ducati, as Gigi Dall’Igna, the boss of the Corse department confirms he has started working on a completely new Desmosedici MotoGP prototype bike.

According to Motorcyclenews quoted by gp-inside, Dall’Igna now has a much better idea about how the new GP15 must be. In fact, his initial claims that 6 months should be enough for him to figure out a new strategy for Ducati’s MotoGP segment turn out to be true. One of the biggest, if not THE biggest problem Ducati has is that the bikes are understeering, requiring the pilots to actually fight to keep them on the right line through the turns.

The straight line speed has recently turned out to be one of Ducati’s strongest points, with Andrea Iannone reportedly reaching past the 360 km/h (223 mph) mark. Still, with the very poor handling through the turns and excessive tire wear, the bikes lost more on winding circuits than they could gain on the high-speed sectors.

Dall’Igna adds that he managed to identify the most stringent problems for the GP14 machines and even more,he believes he has the solutions for them. Still the Ducati Corse boss admints that the process is a very complex one and there is absolutely no way to rush things, with the new bike technically impossible to arrive before the end of the season. The Italian also adds that he prefers to have as much data as possible before things “get serious “, as he’d really love to do this only once and the right way, in a single-shot trick.

Dall’Igna was brought over from Aprilia, after the former Corse top hat Filippo Preziosi resigned early in 2013. The department was briefly run by Bernhard Gobmeier, a professional whose capabilities were already proven at BMW. While back in the day we all thought that it was up to the German to save Ducati from a gruesome drift into MotoGP dishonor, CEO Claudio Domenicali did his best to “steal” Dall’Igna from Aprilia.

Gigi Dall’Igna was given a free hand to do whatever he felt necessary at Ducati Corse and right from his early days he told everyone that he will build a completely new motorcycle in case the actual one will be impossible to improve to the desired standard. It turns out that all he said until now was true, so we might expect to see a much different Ducati Desmosedici in the autumn…
