If Santa has trouble getting your presents under the tree this year, worry not. He’s probably late because he’s in custody after his latest stint, which involved floating into traffic and blocking it for more than 3 hours.
It happened in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, UK, when a giant inflatable Santa managed to break free from its moorings and float into traffic. That sounds funny (and it probably was, for the first seconds), but for the drivers who had to wait for hours to get back home, it was a nightmare.

Taxi driver Muhammad Faree was on the scene when it happened, and he had his camera ready. You can see the video he also posted to his Facebook page at the bottom of this one. Faree says he saw Santa’s moorings snap and it drifting away from a nearby house into the street. Santa was part of the Christmas decorations, but it looks like he wasn’t happy with the homeowners’ arrangements.

“It was one of the more unusual reasons to be stuck in traffic,” Faree tells the BBC about the strange, funny but terribly frustrating incident. “I saw it wobble and then come down on to the road – it did raise a smile. It was massive, bigger than my seven-seater car.”

Santa’s escape was at around 1:30 p.m. but it wasn’t until 5:00 p.m. that the road had been cleared. Santa’s whereabouts are not known at this time, but we assume its owners had been fined and it was placed somewhere under lock and key.

An AA traffic alert that went out read, “Partially blocked and slow traffic due to a large inflatable Santa on road on B198 Cromwell Road both ways in Wisbech.” Imagine having to write that without cracking a joke because you have to keep the alert as formal as possible.

Here’s Santa after it landed in the street, trying to get up but not really being able to.
