Sinkholes are very scary, and very dangerous, and when and where they do appear, people gather round and just look at it, with fear and amazement as to what has happened. This is not a sink hole, yet it is very similar, and it is the most recent such hole to crop up in China, in the city of Taiyuan, which is located in the Shanxi Province, in the center of the country.
The hole is made up of two separate ones, which are connected at one end. Each measures around ten meters in diameter. The falling debris apparently destroyed several gas pipes and one water pipe, yet nothing serious happened, and the authorities were able to contain the situation.

Surprisingly, nobody was standing directly over the hole, when the earth sank, and there were no injuries to speak of.

These holes should not be confused with naturally-occurring sinkholes, and they are caused by poor road construction, as well as nearby building works. These put extra strain on the road surface, through vibrations, which resonate and end up cracking it, until it falls onto itself.
