Gi-Bike, the Electric Folding Urban Commuter

Welcome the Gi-Bike, another interesting project, aimed at bringing together the convenience of folding bikes and the road worthiness of the pedelec designs.

The Gi-Bike takes 1 second to fold and it has a very small footprint when folded, being easy to store in closets, the corner of your office, or to be taken into an elevator or train. Made from aluminium and several lightweight materials used in key places, this pedelec weighs in at only 17 kg (37.4 lbs) so it’s well on the decent size compared to similar builds.

It’s really cool that the Gi-Bike sports 5 levels of assistance, and it can provide a range of 40 miles (64 km) on electric power only, with the range obviously expanding in case the riders only use moderate assistance. All the systems on the bike are weatherproofed, so you don’t have to worry riding in the rain. In fact the creators of the Gi-Bike are also working on a set of mudguards for riding in the wet.

Gi-Bike obviously integrates with smartphones and dedicated apps (Android and iOS) can offer plenty of riding data or even light up the LED system on the bike when it’s getting dark. Even more, the internal GPS system can even lock the bike in case it gets out an user-defined range.

Disc brakes help keep speed under control, too. The top speed electric propulsion offers is 25 km/h (15 mph) due to road regulations but that’s more than enough for solid commuting. The LiFePO4 battery needs 4 hours for a full recharge and this means you can commute over even greater distances, as you have plenty of time to get the battery pack to 100% again during work hours.

The Gi-Bike is up for grabs on preorder on Kickstarter, for $2,990 (€2,180), with a $3,390 (€2,470) price tag when it starts shipping.
