Having dropped from the list of Detroit’s Big Three for nearly a decade, General Motors (GM) is trying to reinvent itself by betting on an electric future.
The carmaker, currently owning only four brands in the U.S. - Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac – is no longer as active in the industry as it used to be back in the day. But, by partnering with former foes the likes of Honda, the company plans to build as soon as next year electric, connected and even autonomous cars.

Part of this electrification strategy is venturing into the electric bike market. Completely out of the blue, GM presented over the weekend two integrated and connected eBikes that for now have no name, nor brand.

In an attempt to make people aware it is still around, GM throws in some cash and launches a global challenge to get this new eBike business started.

As of now and until November 26, GM is asking global audiences to name the brand for the eBikes. The winning name will secure for the one who proposed it a prize of $10,000, while the following nine other participants responsible for runner-up submissions will each receive $1,000.

To be eligible for the prizes, participants will have to go the eBikeBrandChallenge website and submit ideas that are simple, smart, bold and fun, but also capable of being understood around the world, GM says. The winner will be announced on January 31.

“We blended electrification engineering know-how, design talents, and automotive-grade testing with great minds from the bike industry to create our eBikes,” said in a statement Hannah Parish, GM’s mobility solutions director.

“Now we want to expand our thinking beyond the company walls and hear from people who like to move and have rad ideas.”

Before going to GM’s website to submit your idea, make sure you read the Creative Brief attached below.

Editor's note: As per GM, global challange doesn't actually mean global. The challenge is opwn only to "individuals who are legal residents of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia, Canada (excluding Quebec), Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, or the United Kingdom."
