Gerry Jenkins Is the New Chrysler China CEO

Having the same desire to succeed on the still booming Chinese market as all manufacturers present there, American carmaker Chrysler chose to place the future of the Chinese branch in the hands of the former Chrysler Australia managing director, Gerry Jenkins.

Jenkins will leave his current position in Oz, which he held since March 2003, on August 1, to replace the soon-to-be-retired Wayne Chumley. No replacement for Jenkins at the helm of Chrysler's Australian operations has yet been announced.

Jenkins is a type of a lifer for Chrysler, having joined the company in 1979 in Canada, his country of origin. He held various positions with the manufacturer, in Europe, North America and more recently Australia.

“Living and working in Australia has been a rewarding experience that I will cherish forever,”
Jenkins told GoAuto.

“The opportunity to live and work in China couldn’t have come at a better time,” he said. “We have some exciting products on the way and the emphasis placed on the Chinese market has never been greater.”

Jenkins, currently 52, is the man largely responsible for the growth the American carmaker registered in the last years in Australia. Whereas in 2003 Down Under did not count as one of Chrysler's 15 main international markets, it currently ranks third in that chart, aiming, as Jenkins says, to overtake the second position.

“After experiencing the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee, I know Chrysler Australia will continue to grow in importance for both Chrysler and the Australian market,” Jenkins says of the place he will leave behind.
