Canadians have a reputation for being incredibly polite, to the point where they might even apologize right before punching you for something you did. This could prove the contrary.
Road rage incidents have become increasingly common, but you rarely hear about one so violent happening in Canada. Usually (and without generalizing), most shoot-outs and violent fights that make headlines happen in busy areas in US cities and in some European countries.
Here is one instance where the traditional Canadian politeness ran in short supply. One German tourist was shot in the head and is now in serious condition in the hospital, after what police believe was a road rage altercation, NDTV reports.
The tourist is 60 years old and was driving his family on vacation. The incident happened in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, on a highway near Stoney Nakoda First Nation, west of Calgary. The tourists were probably on their way to the Banff National Park, which is nearby.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sergeant Tom Kalis tells the media the driver was shot in the head whilst driving, which caused his truck to swerve and smash into a tree. He was taken to a hospital in Calgary “conscious and lucid,” but doctors have informed the family that his injury is “critical and life threatening.”
No one else was injured in the accident.
“The man sustained a gunshot wound to the head,” Kalis says. “Our current theory is that this was an aggravated road rage incident.”
Police are now looking for a white male who was behind the wheel of a small black sedan, which drove by the tourist’s truck when the shot was heard. Though police say this could have been an “aggravated” road rage incident, they don’t offer details into what may have started it or how it played out.
