Another night of civil unrest has resulted in considerable damage to local businesses in various U.S. cities, countless arrests and further reports of looting and rioting. The latest on that front seems to be a propensity to looting car dealerships, with the goal of securing rides for burnouts.
The situation escalated last week, after the death of George Floyd at the hands of white policemen from the Minneapolis, Minnesota Police Department, during what should have been a routine arrest. Videos of the incident were released online, sparking outrage and then calls for peaceful protests to end discrimination and injustice.
The protests have since spread across the country, and even reached cities in Europe, but have turned violent. Peaceful protesting gave way to rioting and looting, with countless businesses being damaged in the process. It was only a matter of time before car dealerships became targets, and it happened on Sunday night.
NBC Bay Area notes that the San Leandro Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM SRT dealership in San Leandro, California, has been hit hardest, with looters driving off in a score of Dodge Challenger Hellcats, Demons and Chargers. Other California dealerships were also ransacked and destroyed, with rioters setting the luxury cars on display on fire after tagging and smashing them, but the peculiarity about the San Leandro incident is that this was clearly done for entertainment purposes.
Videos of looters taking out the rides were posted to social media for bragging rights only. You can see one of them embedded at the bottom of the page, of a Hellcat being taken out for burnouts. Others are available both on Twitter and Instagram, but can’t be embedded here because of their graphic nature.
It’s just one of the many that have emerged since the dealership was broken into, confirming that this had little to do with the Floyd protests and more with wanting an opportunity to land a sweet ride that was otherwise out of reach.
Following these events, the city of San Leandro was issued a strict curfew, with the PD urging citizens to stay indoors for their own safety. President Trump has condemned the looting and the rioting, calling those who engage in it “thugs.” Meanwhile, “rioting is the language of the unheard,” a phrase once uttered by Dr. Martin Luther King, is often used by those trying to explain such behavior.
