R-Space, or Espace, this is the question. Although the French manufacturer is denying the R-Space model currently on display on the floor of the Geneva Auto Show is not a preview of the future Espace MPV, the industry is already worked up about the possibility of the concept being a short glimpse into the not-so-distant future.
Borrowing the same flashy orange seen on the Captur concept, the R-Space is a design exercise meant, according to Renault, to prove that an MPV can be sexy too. And, truth be told, their gamble paid off.
The R-Space comes with a very distinct feature, apparently the focus of the design departments of all auto makers presenting MPVs in Geneva: the doors. Opening pretty much in the same manner as the doors on Opel's Meriva, the ones on the R-Space leave no room for a B-pillar, just like in the Ford B-MAX.
The interior of the MPV, as futuristic as it can be, borrows elements from other Renault concepts, like the seats that seem to have been taken off the DeZir.
Under the hood of the R-SPace model lies a three-cylinder 900 cc petrol engine mated to an Efficient Dual Clutch transmission (EDC), which develops an impressive 110 horsepower. The engine is a concept in itself, as it previews the new range of modular TCe engines called Energy TCe.
“With R-Space, it was the pent-up energy in tensed muscles that inspired me. I wanted to make people feel the urge to caress the body, to make it sensuous – despite the fact that this is an MPV aimed at families,” said Fabrice Pouille, exterior designer for the model.
