The new interpretation of the connection between the car and the driver, taken well into the second half of the century, is BMW's new Vision concept, called ConnectedDrive. Currently on display on the floor of the Geneva Auto Show, the model promises to reinvent the way in which the driver interacts and relates to his vehicle.
Questionable looks aside, the Vision bring to life and integrates into one smooth operating package all the infotainment systems and gadgetry we see today scattered in vehicles produced worldwide. Both existing and new technologies have been wrapped in an integrated shell, providing an interesting mix between information and light.
For the Vision, BMW had to develop a new Head-Up Display (HUD), capable of rendering the information in 3D and projecting information about the route precisely onto the location of a possible turn-off, in relation to the actual field of view.
A freely programmable instrument cluster comes to complete the HUD, providing the driver with the same goggles-free 3D imaging.
The new Vision does not integrate only the driver with the car, but also the passenger and even the pedestrians. An Emotional Browser can gather data about the surroundings, including people, mood or location, for the occupants to get a better idea of how the area they are passing through is shaping up.
The car is packed with sensors, embedded into the headlights and the rear lights to monitor the traffic situation and the environment. The outside mirrors have been replaced by antennas, used as transmission-reception hubs for the data coming from or to the vehicle.
