Genesis Motors, the luxury vehicle division of Hyundai, can talk the talk and walk the walk. Including the Genesis G90 full-size sedan, the well-to-do brand will expand its lineup to six models by 2020.
Coming courtesy of The Korean Car Blog, the picture featured above is a roadmap that provides a glimpse into the near future of the South Korean automaker. When Hyundai announced the birth of Genesis, we were told that the lineup would consist of three models. However, Genesis changed its mind 180 degrees.
No later than this summer, the Genesis G90 will be joined by the direct successor of the current Hyundai Genesis, christened the G80. After that, the Genesis New York Concept-based G70 compact executive sedan will debut later in 2016 or early in 2017.
Following in the footsteps of the core models, Genesis will launch a mid-size luxury SUV, a compact SUV, and a so-called “near luxury sports coupe” by the end of the decade. Nothing is known about these babies at the present moment, albeit it’s fair to assume that the SUVs will be related to their sedan counterparts. The coupe probably refers to a G70 with two fewer doors or a replacement for the Hyundai Genesis Coupe.
Boiled down to their core, the Genesis G70 and the tentatively named G70 Coupe are the South Korean automaker’s answer to German premium manufacturers. More specifically, the G70 and G70 Coupe will rival the Audi A4 and A5, BMW 3 and 4 Series, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Sedan and C-Class Coupe.
What else can we expect from Genesis Motors? Well, the outfit is betting big on electrification. Dave Zuchowski, the chief exec of Hyundai Motor America, thinks that PHEVs are “a wonderful midterm strategy.” In my mind, that's a tell-tale sign that the next step is all-electric vehicles. It's only natural, more so if you consider that Hyundai sells three different versions of the Ioniq: the Hybrid, Plug-In Hybrid, and Electric.
