Genesis G70 Wagon Rendered Because Nothing Spells Luxury Better Than a Wagon

When Hyundai announced it would create a separate brand for its more luxurious models called Genesis (after its flagship model at the time), it was clear the South Korean manufacturers had reached maturity and were ready to fight with the big boys from Germany.

After the G90 and G80 models, this fall came the turn of the G70 mid-sized sedan, and the moment we saw it, it struck us: it's not that the Korean company couldn't design beautiful cars until now, it's just that it didn't feel we were worth the bother. Somehow, it seems to associate attractive exterior design with premium cars, which is wrong on more levels than one.

Even so, the new G70 won't probably be to everyone's taste. The large grille looks nice until a light shines through the wide mesh and reveals what's trying to hide behind it while the lower part of the front bumper might not find too many fans among the more conservative.

Overall, though, we feel it's a huge improvement over the models sold by its sister, more affordable brand. We'd still have the Kia Stinger over it at any time of the day or night, but if we're feeling a bit posher, we might just be swayed toward the Genesis by the quality of the interior.

With Hyundai struggling to make Genesis look as premium as possible, the last thing it should do is launch a wagon version of the sedan. Sure, all its German competitors have them, but they don't have anything to prove. When you're the new kid in school, you don't wear a pink t-shirt just because you saw the team's quarterback do it the other day. You're not on level ground.

But, just in case Genesis had a short-circuit and decided to go through with it, this rendering pretty much shows us what it would look like. It wouldn't be the end of the world since the front end is G70's strongest suit anyway, but it wouldn't help the model or the emerging brand either. If somebody was undecided between a Genesis and an Audi, BMW or Mercedes-Benz, we doubt a wagon version would tilt the balance.
