After the 2014 tally of 30,433,365 recalled cars, post-bailout General Motors isn’t ready to end this unfortunate chapter of its modern history. If we’re to put our sensible pants on, this is not a million-strong recall campaign we were used to from last year, but one that nudges 70,000 cars.
More specifically, the Detroit-based automotive giant issued a recall recently for approximately 69,633 vehicles. According to a document sent to the automotive safety watchdogs from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, campaign 15V064000 covers certain examples of older Pontiac G6 and Chevy Malibu models.
Certain model year 2006 to 2007 Pontiac G6 vehicles, manufactured between April 18, 2006 and June 30, 2006, as well as certain 2006 to 2007 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx made between April 1, 2006 and June 30, 2006 make up this safety op. According to GM, this is an expansion of recall 14V-153 to cover additional cars built from April 1, 2006 to June 30, 2006.
General Motors states that the affected vehicles may suffer from “a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving.” As a consequence of losing the electric power steering, the driver will need to use greater effort to steer the defective automobile at low speeds.
Affected owners will be notified shortly, with the dealers instructed to replace the torque sensor assembly free of charge. For more intel on the recall on hand, owners may contact Chevy and Pontiac at 1-800-222-1020 / 1-800-762-2737. Don’t forget to specify to the operator that the number for this recall is 14772.
