General Motors Moved 267,461 Vehicles In June

Compared to the same month a year ago, General Motors' total U.S. sales were up by just 1 percent, with retail sales up 1 percent and fleet sales by a mere 2 percentage points. Despite analysts forecasting a 6.3 percent drop over the negative impact of recalled cars, June was the "third very strong month in a row" for GM.

Considering that there were two fewer selling days in June compared with a year ago, General Motors informs that sales jumped 9 percent on a selling-day adjusted basis. So which were the best performing brands and nameplates that "spearheaded" GM's June 2014 sales?

Well, Buick had it's best June since 2006 thanks to an 18 percent increase in deliveries. Encore sales rose 82 percent, while the LaCrosse boasted a 33 percent increase. The GMC brand also had its best June since 2006, with deliveries up 11 percent over the same month last year. Highlights worth mentioning are the Savana (up 129 percent), the redesigned Yukon (120 percent increase) and the Yukon XL (70 percent).

The Chevrolet brand saw multiple sales increases as well. For starters, the Tahoe was up 93 percent, closely followed by the Suburban with 73 percent more sales compared to June 2013. The Spark and Sonic were up 19 and 36 percent, respectively, while the Silverado pickup truck saw an increase of just 1 percent. As for Cadillac, this was the best June for the brand since 2008, with Escalade sales up 57 percent.

With all due respect GM, the 1 percent overall sales increase over June 2013 is more of a break even situation than a success story, even though your commercial fleet business posted a 48 percent increase driven by pickup and van sales. The more curious reader will be surprised to know that the Avalanche, Colorado, Volt and Cruze posted massively negative year-over-year monthly changes in units moved, which is pretty bad news.

Speaking of news, did you know that General Motors just announced 6 new recall campaigns covering 8.4 million vehicles of which 7.6 million are affected by the infamous "inadvertent ignition key rotation" fault? GM really needs to step up its game, especially at a time when things aren't that rosy for CEO Mary Barra and company.
