After the shameful episode known as Year of The Recalls, General Motors appears to be on a losing streak as far as build quality and safety is concerned. This story is not at all related to the faulty ignition switch or the 30 million vehicles recalled by GM last year. This story is all about GM's Indian division.
As expected, General Motors in North America is different from its counterpart in India. This difference is so vast, you can see that they’re fundamentally different entities just by looking at their regional vehicle lineups. In India, we won’t find recalled fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro muscle cars, but we find recalled Chevrolet Spark, Beat, and Enjoy MPVs.

The Spark and Beat are simple city cars while the Enjoy is a small people carrier. According to General Motors India, the three nameplates are included in a safety recall comprising of 155,000 cars manufactured between 2007 and late 2014. The issues GM India aims to address with these vehicles is one that affects the remote keyless entry accessory, but we don’t know exactly what kind of condition or glitch it actually is.

GMI president and Managing Director Arvind Saxena declared the following: “Quality is our highest priority and we are committed to putting customers at the center of everything we do. If there is a potential issue, we ensure that it is corrected as soon as possible as part of our complete commitment to customer satisfaction."

As such, we’re left in the dark about what could possibly go wrong with the remote keyless entry accessory, but owners should worry about the issue. General Motors India reports that affected vehicles will be repaired, free of charge, by any of the 257 service centers operated by GM India. To boot, customers are notified individually about the safety recall, which is a nice touch from our point of view.

According to a number of local reports, the potential issue may be a wiring defect that could cause the accessory to malfunction and lock the owner out of the car. Goodness gracious then, especially when you put this recall side-by-side to the fiasco that happened (and still happens) to General Motors USA.
