General Motors sees the North American International Auto Show as the best occasion to unveil a bunch of new models that could revamp its sales and bring it in the forefront of the automotive industry. And when we say “a bunch of new models” we actually mean 17 new and upcoming cars and crossovers particularly focused on the most important attributes of today's cars: fuel economy, attractive design and next-generation technology.

“In many ways, today marks a new beginning for General Motors, as we dramatically accelerate and expand the restructuring that we’ve been driving in North America, and around the globe, for the past several years,” said GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner.

“Buried in all the financial news of recent months, is that we’ve made tremendous progress in recent years in making cars and trucks that consumers really want to buy,” Wagoner said. “At the same time, we’re committed to leading the industry on the most important issue we face over the next generation: the development of alternative-fuel propulsion.”

In short terms, General Motors plans to underline its efforts to comply with the United States government requirements through a whole new product lineup including the “fuel-efficient Spark mini car and Orlando, a seven-seat multi-purpose vehicle,” as the American automaker mentioned in a press statement. The common feature for all these models is fuel efficiency, GM said, with most of them likely to arrive on the market in 2010 and 2011.
