General Motors Considering a Toyota GT 86 Rival

With Ford cutting down half of the Mustangs cylinders to offer it in Europe as some sort of American ricer “abomination”, GM thinks of an affordable rear-wheel drive small-sized car for the future, in order to rival Toyota’s GT 86 back-to-basic sportscar.

In an interview with Automotive News, General Motors’ president Mark Reuss revealed that a not-too-expensive rear-wheel drive vehicle in the same class with the Toyota GT 86 / Subaru BRZ / Scion FR-S may attract young drivers in the future.

“A really nice, light, rear-drive car that’s inexpensive - we know that rings a bell. That’d be a huge win for us if we had that,” Reuss told our source, making us think over the Chevrolet Code 130R concept that was revealed last year.

Reuss also said that in order for Chevrolet to make such a car, its design will be underpinned by a “really scaleable and efficient” platform rather than the aforementioned concept. However, we can’t see how that sort of “infantile Camaro” styled vehicle could surpass the perfectly balanced Toyota GT 86 that was specially designed to bring back the classic sportscar.
