It might seem strange that an American company like GM has something to do with autonomous cars, but actually, they sponsored the Futurama expo in 1939 New York, a show that was centered around automated highways. So The General has had self-driving cars on its mind for a while now.
The automotive giant has promised to bring cars that partially drive themselves by the middle of the decade, with more sophisticated self-driving systems by the end of the decade.
These would center around new sensors that would make the car safer to drive. If combined with computer maps and GPS, these radars would make the drivers obsolete, turning him into a passenger that can do something else while commuting.
“The technologies we’re developing will provide an added convenience by partially or even completely taking over the driving duties,” Taub said. “The primary goal, though, is safety. Future generation safety systems will eliminate the crash altogether by interceding on behalf of drivers before they’re even aware of a hazardous situation.”
