GEMs Shine as Segment Leaders

American manufacturer's Chrysler Global Electric Motorcars division posted its to-date sales figures and reported the 40,000 electric vehicles sold managed to keep in on top of its segment. The GEMs sold so far managed to drive 500 million emission-free miles and helped save 19.5 million gallons of gasoline.

“GEM is a successful example of how Chrysler Group is reducing CO2 emissions while answering customer needs for alternatively powered vehicles,” Steve Bartoli - Head of Regulatory Affairs and Engineering Planning for Chrysler Group said in a release.

“GEM is directly responsible for cutting CO2 output by more than 93,000 tons by replacing gasoline-powered vehicles with electric vehicles.”

GEMs are classified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as Low Speed Vehicles (LSV) or Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs), meaning they are street-legal in most states on roads posted 35 mph or less.

The GEM line provides a range of up to 30 miles on a charge and offers six models, all providing –Chrysler says- about the same features of regular cars (!). GEMs are eligible for incentives and tax credits from clean-air districts and other governmental agencies.

"They are used for running errands, driving to work or school, hauling equipment, or transporting people around work facilities, and with operating costs of only about two cents per mile, have become an eco-friendly and cost-effective transportation alternative," Chrysler says.
