Gemballa May Be Reborn on Monday

Good news for fans of German tuning house Gemballa: the tuner will be holding a press conference on August 23, an event during which Andreas Schwarz, the tuner's managing director, is expected to announce the rebirth of Gemballa. Either that, or Uwe Gemballa has been found.

Gemballa, who was founded in 1981 by Uwe Gemballa, has quickly become one of the tuner of choice for Porsche vehicles. Unfortunately for the Leonberg-based tuner, the company's founder and head, Uwe, pulled a disappearing act earlier this year in South Africa, sending the tuner crashing.

Speculation on what happened with Uwe continues, with some saying he has been killed, others hinting to a real disappearance and with some even saying Uwe Gemballa decided to make himself disappear to escape German authorities who, prior to his disappearance, raided Gemballa's facility and seized several cars.

Earlier this week, news of Gemballa selling Uwe's McLaren F1, coincidentally the first ever F1 ever manufactured, have surfaced in the media. The $3,175,000 (2.46 million euros) asked for it is, we reckon, a big enough of the sum to make the company's problems disappear.

The revived Gemballa is expected to be headed by the same Andreas Schwarz. No additional details about what will be announced on Monday are yet available. We will be following the story and come back on it on Monday, hopefully with news of the revival and, why not, the return of Uwe as well.

The last car manufactured by Gemballa is the Ferrari Enzo-based MIG-U1 presented in January 2010. The tuner was supposed to manufacture 25 units of the vehicle.
