Geely Automobile Holdings, who owns Swedish automaker Volvo Cars, has announced plans to start exporting its upcoming Volvo-developed vehicles to the United States in 2016.
“Our acquisition of Volvo enhanced our image and overseas consumers are seeing us as an international company,” Gui Shengyue, chief executive officer of Geely, said last month. “Our deliveries in US and Europe will be banking on those jointly developed models.”
According to Bloomberg, chairman Li Shufu has kept Geely and Volvo as separate brands on concerns that an association with a Chinese company would diminish the Swedish manufacturer’s image. Now, he hopes that jointly-developed models will help Geely rise as China’s largest automobile exporter.
The first Geely-Volvo cars are scheduled to hit the Chinese market in 2015. Very little is know about these vehicles, but they will most probably use the modular platform the two companies are working on.
