The 280ZX, the second generation Z-car from Nissan, is a great car and is nowadays appreciated as a classic and one of the best sports cars of its era. However, people tend to take already good (classic) designs and ‘improve’, sometimes actually succeeding in improving them.
Seth Kettleman, the owner of this 280ZX has decided that the car didn’t have enough poke, so he ripped out its old six-pot motor and replaced it with a proper piece of military hardware: a Garrett turboshaft engine. It’s amusing how people can buy outdated military hardware off the internet and bolt it straight onto anything they see fit.

The owner chose this engine wisely, however, as it isn’t designed to produce thrust, like regular jet engines, but its high-speed exhaust gases spin the blades of a turbine, which in turn spin a shaft connected to the gearbox and thus the power is easily transferred to the road.

The 210hp engine doesn’t make the car particularly quick, but it has the advantage of running on pretty much any fuel you find, like regular petrol, diesel, kerosene and even jet fuels. The engine isn’t necessarily economically viable, as it transforms fuel into waste gas at a rate of 76 liters (20 US gallons) an hour.

The matte black car looks really good and has been professionally painted to achieve the ‘rat-rod’ look and can be yours for around $15-16,000 (€12-13,000) according to its eBay sale page.
