There is promise of a new life for Gas Gas, as the Spanish manufacturer was salvaged from extinction by some fellow countrymen. We’re talking about Spanish group Torrot, which operates in the financial markets, as well as electric bicycles and motorbikes manufacturing.
Torrot stepped in to save the house of Gerona, which struggled with severe financial difficulties and had accumulated around €30 million ($33.5 mil) in debts over the years. Gas Gas reached a point where not even government help in the form of loans was able to keep the factory running, and the company was steadily heading for liquidation.
The reports of Gas Gas returning to the enduro and trial scene are yet to be confirmed by official sources, but the French guys at moto-station appear to be quite sure that this is all a matter of time. They are already welcoming Gas Gas back and published several photos of what is said to be an EC 300 machine in 2016 model year livery.
Apparently, the machine retains much of the setup of its previous incarnations. This includes a Marzocchi fork, Marzocchi also being one of the companies that have only recently been saved from extinction.
The French seem to have identified a Reiger rear monoshock, Nissin calipers squeezing Galfer rotors, and the 2-stroke engine that is said to have received electric starting as a standard option, as opposed to its optional character in the past.
Seeing the house of Gerona back on track is, of course, very nice, and we can only hope that the new owner of Gas Gas manages to set things straight and make the company profitable again soon.
No word yet on how the workforce evolved at Gas Gas. When the production was first halted around one year ago, Gas Gas had 500 employees and plans to lay off some of them were being discussed. We're keeping an eye on this matter and will return soon with fresh news.
