Good news from Garmin's camp as it looks like they're gunning GoPro with two new full HD 1080p action cameras, the VIRB and VIRB Elite. To be honest, we kind of love the VIRB more than we enjoyed the GoPro gear as it brings several new cool features.
Needless to say that the Garmin VIRB cameras are very compact and robust, IPX-7 waterproof and can also take some beating and still work flawlessly.

One of the cool things about the Garmin VIRB is the 1.4" (3.5cm) Chroma color display for easier setup and on-spot playback. Using minimal power for the display, the VIRB can still shoot for as long as 3 hours in Full HD on one charge.

Advanced lens correction and image stabilization technologies are used to make the recordings look great even before editing, while still photographs can be taken while the camera is recording, with photo burst and time lapse modes available. A microSD card can be used for recordings, with the maximum capacity of 64GB being able to store over 7 hours of 1080p footage.

The Garmin VIRB Elite brings even more goodies to the action game: a high-sensitivity GPS, accelerometer, altimeter, and WiFi to interact with iPhone and Android phones. As a plus, the Elite also tracks location, speed, elevation and heart rate (with an optional monitor) and more parameters, easy to review on the camera or to embed in the video during editing.

Specific action profiles are available on the Garmin VIRB Elite, and to see why this camera is so cool, think about the Ski Mode: the camera can tell wheter you're going up the hill on the ski lift and will automatically enter standby mode, saving juice and memory.

As you begin your descent the Garmin VIRB Elite will automatically enter recording mode, eliminating the frustration of having forgotten to turn it on during a spectacular downhill.

Mobile and desktop software is being developed for connection, playback and remote functionality, as well as editing, with Facebook, YouTube and Instagram accessibility.

Available for purchase in September 2013, the VIRB is $299.99 (€223), and VIRB Elite is $399.99 (€298).
