Garmin reveals a new GPS dedicated to motorcycles, the Zumo 590LM. Of course, this unit can also be used inside cars with the right holder, but its special construction makes it impervious to vibrations, dust, splashes or rain… that is, all the things with which riders have to cope at times.
The Zumo 590LM comes with a larger screen that its predecessor 390LM had: 5”versus 4.3”, providing a better image and easier observation of the screen. The design cues are similar to the 390, and are also consistent with Garmin’s recent bike units. The LM stands for Lifetime Maps, and tells a beautiful story: you get all the future maps for free, thus saving nice cash you can otherwise spend on gas. Or beers.

This unit brings several premium features over the 390LM: a dual orientation display, music and media control (including Pandora), live traffic info via the Smartphone Link app and comes with a 3D terrain option. Add in support for custom maps, active lane guidance and a removable battery for increased convenience.

Bluetooth connectivity and curvy roads are obviously standard trim, while the Real Directions feature will guide you using landmarks, such as stop signs or traffic lights to rid youof the need to search for street names. Using a Bluetooth headset and the Smartphone Link app, users can also call POIs while riding, which may prove useful in certain occasions.

Slotting as a premium item, the Garmin Zumo 590LM is really cool and anything but cheap. It surfaces with an $800 (€580)price tag, and this may be a steep one for many riders. We can only hope that the 390LM becomes cheaper after the new one hits the street.
