Garage Tours Web Series Visits Classic NASCAR Restoration Shop

Last month, Formula Drift champ Chris Forsberg kicked off a new web series that showed him visiting a cool shop or garage each week. He’s already visited the shop of Bondurant School of High Performance Driving, Hendricks Motorsports and Magnus Walker’s amazing collection of Porsches, but for one of the recent episodes, he checks out a North Carolina shop that specializes in restoring vintage and historic NASCAR racecars.

Not too far from NASCAR’s home in Charlotte, NC, Rhine Enterprises brings old, retired racers back to life. In the shop, owner Bill Rhine shows some truly iconic racecars including the 1981 No. 2 Wrangler Pontiac driven by none other than Dale Earnhardt and a 1984 Pontiac that won Pocono and Darlington driven by Tim Richmond, who was the inspiration for Cole Trickle in Days of Thunder.

Except for gears, engines and transmissions, Rhine Enterprises does all of the work themselves ranging from the custom-made body work to the technical chassis reconstruction. The cool part is that Rhine brings in original crew members who previously worked on the car to authenticate, give advice or simply reminisce. There are also plenty of modern-era bodies lying around outside the shop meaning that he has work for years to come.

As much as Rhine has in the main shop, he takes Forsberg to a nearby barn to show off even more historical NASCAR gems. And the shop doesn’t just do NASCAR racers either as there is a race-prepped VW Corrado sitting off to the side as well as a a rare 1968 Holman-Moody Ford Can-Am car.
