Just before the launching weekend for the latest film in the Star Wars saga, The Force Awakens, Garage Italia Customs came up with no less than twelve special vehicles to mark the European premiere of the highly-anticipated movie.
If this sounds like a clear attempt at milking the very lucrative trend surrounding Star Wars and the huge fanbase of the series, that’s probably because it is. There is absolutely nothing linking Garage Italia Customs or the Fiat 500 with the SF franchise, apart from another custom project shown earlier at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

If that model had the lousy-aiming stormtroopers as an inspiration source, two of these twelve new models pivoted around the good old R2-D2, and the newer addition to the droids’ ranks, the rolling ball with another ball on top called BB-8.

We might have hastened a little when we said there was nothing linking the Star Wars universe to the small Fiat 500. Do a quick memory search and try to come up with a better car for an R2-D2 conversion than the Fiat 500. OK, maybe the smart fortwo would require even less makeup to be a convincing droid, but the Fiat 500 is right up there.

The two Italian cars have received complete makeovers both inside and out, but without any added bits that would alter the car’s shape in any way. Instead, the R2-D2 Fiat 500 is the proud new owner of a white and blue livery with two-tone wheels, really dark windows to match the grille, one red headlight and R2-D2 wheel hubs.

The interior features the same three-color combination, with the added silver on the door handles and the dashboard in front of the passenger where the Star Wars logo easily stands out. Since nobody really knows what the interior of an R2-D2 looks like, we’ll take Garage Italia Customs’ version as it is.

The car dedicated to the new droid gets a similar treatment, but with different colors (white, orange and a touch of grey). Apart from the palette, though, the two cars are rather similar.

However generic these conversions might be, you can’t deny the fact that turning around from the popcorn stand and seeing something like this would be really cool.
