Garage Attendant Totals Ferrari 599 GTO after Confusing the Accelerator with the Brake

Instead of having their Ferrari 599 GTO nicely waiting for them in front of the hotel, an unfortunate Dutch couple visiting Rome ended up getting it totaled by the garage attendant. The accident happened a couple of days ago, and it appears the driver simply got the pedals wrong. Since we’re talking about a sportscar that has an estimated price of almost half a million dollars, we guess it had insurance.

Designed as a road-going version of the 599XX, until a couple of years ago the 599 GTO used to be Ferrari’s fastest road car ever. Able to lap the Fiorano test circuit in 1 minute and 24 seconds, this beauty is one second faster than the Enzo.

Whether it’s the sportscar’s performance that makes it that expensive or the fact that only 599 units were ever produced, seeing one of them destroyed is a total shame.

As we said, the attendant was supposed to be delivering the rare supercar to its owners, a couple that had taken part in a meeting of Ferrari fans in Anzio, south of Rome. The irony is that the two were staying in a hotel located just a few streets away from where the car was being stored.

I got confused - instead of the brake, I pressed down the accelerator,” the man told police who were first on the scene, according to Corriere Della Sera. Even though he was lightly injured, nobody else was harmed in the incident, which clearly can’t be said about the sportscar.

The identity of the Dutch owner was not revealed, but considering the car will most likely end up in the scrapyard we can’t help but feel sorry for the poor fellow.
