A group of gamers has set a new Guinness World Record title for the "longest video marathon in a racing game."
The five players have raced the Ford GT at Le Mans in the Xbox One franchise Forza Motorsport 6. It all happened at the Ford Gamescom 2016 in Germany, and they beat the previous world record by 28 minutes and 21 seconds. Together, they drove a simulated 41,003 kilometers (25,478 miles) and managed to cover 3,015 laps of the famous Circuit de la Sarthe.
The same track hosted the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans in real life, where Ford’s 2017 GT racing car won the title in its class. The virtual challenge took place at the Microsoft stand at Gamescom, Europe’s biggest trade fair specialized in interactive games.
While driving for extended periods of time is an incredibly dangerous thing to do, so is gaming for two days. According to Ford, the gamers drank 32 energy drinks, 146 bottles of water, and 47 bottles of soft drinks.
The spree was completed with over three kilograms (6.6 pounds) of sweets, and each of the five players took power naps to endure the grueling challenge.
Over the 48 hours, 29 minutes and 21 seconds of virtual driving, the five players averaged 603 laps of the famous French circuit. As a comparison, Stefan Mucke, a driver for Ford Chip Ganassi Racing, drove 136 laps of the famous circuit in nine hours, five minutes, and 40 seconds.
Mucke said he was impressed by the level of concentration and endurance showed by the five gamers, as they had to keep going for twice the time mandated by the famous racing challenge, the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
We hope that there is no need to mention that you should not attempt to break their record without careful planning and medical supervision, as gaming marathons of this sort are dangerous to the health of any human that attempts such a deed.
The team was composed of Cara Scott, Helene Cressot, Johannes Knapp, Andrea Lorenzo Facchinetti, and Jesus Sicilia Sanchez. The oldest member of the team (Facchinetti) is 42 and comes from Italy, while the youngest (Sanchez) is 23 and is from Spain.
