When The Mountain and Prince Oberyn Martell battle in the eighth episode of the fourth Game of Thrones season, things didn’t turn out that well for the latter. But in Caterpillar’s latest advertorial, chances seem to fade on the professional strongman’s side, as he takes on a Cat D10T Dozer Tractor in an epic tug of war outside of Reykjavik, Iceland.
What you’re about to see is far from being as violent and sinister as the brutal scene from the Game of Thrones episode we mentioned. No, nobody is having their skull crushed by the extremely powerful hands of 6-feet-9-inches tall strongman and actor Hafthor “Thor” Bjornsson.
The clip is the latest short film in the "Built For It" commercial campaign promoting the most recent truck models manufactured by giant heavy duty truck company Caterpillar. Shot outside of Iceland’s capital city, in brutal weather conditions with limited daylight, the video pits Thor against a Cat D10T Dozer in an epic tug of war.
The big fellow didn’t impersonate The Mountain for any reason, obviously. A native of Iceland who won Europe’s 2015 Strongest Man competition, Bjornsson stands 6-feet-9 inches (206 cm) tall, weighs nearly 400 pounds and holds several Guinness World Records for strength. Even so, competing against a powerful truck wasn’t that easy. Luckily, Thor is assisted by about 250 of his fellow Icelanders and one very determined young girl.
Here’s how the truck maker describes the scene:
“In addition to highlighting Iceland’s strongman culture, which dates back to the time of the Vikings, ‘Tug of War’ showcases Caterpillar’s roots—featuring a machine descended from the track-type tractors that gave the company its name 90 years ago. And it proves we’re serious when we say our products are designed to take on anything, anywhere, anytime.”
P.S. Even though The Mountain physically destroys Martell in the battle mentioned above, the HBO series makes a good point: it’s not always the genuine force that helps you win. Before being crushed by his opponent strength, the Prince does poison the big fellow, an attack that leads to his eventual death, days later.
