Galpin Motors, an automotive dealer from Southern California, has announced it has found the long lost 1956 Ford F-100 Pickup that used to belong to Ed “Big Daddy” Roth.
The custom car was presumed to be lost forever, but somehow it was discovered after a three-day road trip to Oklahoma, where it was stored in a barn.

At first, the vehicle will be exhibited in its current form at the home of Galpin Auto Sports, in Van Nuys, Los Angeles. Once enough fans visit the exhibition, the vehicle will undergo a full restoration by the specialists at GAS.

This car is remarkable because Mr. Ed Roth customized it, and because it was the first noteworthy truck ever done by the creator of the Rat Fink. Back in the day, this car was a driving advertising billboard for Roth’s pin-striping business. It featured a V8 engine from Packard, but its custom design elements stole the show for onlookers.

The 1956 Ford F-100 Pickup had a red flame pinstripe, a signature work of Ed Roth, as well as multiple chrome-plated parts, and a mural over the tonneau cover. After a limited time of exhibit at Galpin Auto Sports, this vehicle will be fully restored to its former glory.

The same team that had restored previous creations of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth will also undergo this work. Their previous restorations involved the Orbitron, Mysterion, “Tweedy Pie,” and Dan Woods’ Ice Truck.

Mr. Roth was one of the leading icons of the Kustom Kulture and Hot-rod movement in Southern California at the time when this vehicle was roaming the streets.

Galpin Auto Sports plans to exhibit the resulting restored truck at the Grand National Roadster Show in 2017, so Dave Shuten’ team will have its work cut out.

The idea behind this restoration is to use new parts out of old stocks, as well as other period-correct equipment, methods, and parts, so that the result looks as close to the original as possible.

Unfortunately, the team at Galpin Auto Sports only provided a single image of the truck in its current form.
