You might not’ve known this by now but the upcoming BMW X1 will be migrating towards a front wheel-drive architecture using the same UKL1 platform as the new MINI.
We know it might sound peculiar that the X1, a crossover, will share its platform with the new MINIs but it is true and it will help reduce costs as the battle for profits in the premium segment is heating up.

The F48 X1 will be using the same engines as the Brit too, ranging from turbocharged 1.5-liter 3-cylinder units, up to 2-liter 4-cylinder one with, possibly, more power. We’re expecting the new top spec model to have around 250 HP coming out of the 4 turbocharged petrol unit.

xDrive all-wheel-drive systems will also be available, of course. There’s a good possibility that in the US, the X1 will arrive only as an xDrive model to help sooth the pain of migrating towards the FWD platform for all the BMW enthusiasts out here.

An eDrive hybrid might also be in the works but no official info has been released about such a prospect, just yet. Even so, the new X1 should be a rather interesting addition to the Bavarian range. Look for a release somewhere in late 2015.
