Futuristic Hydroelectric House Looks Like a Seashell, Uses Tidal Power

Architect Margot Krasojevic has recently unveiled her latest concept house, that could easily qualify for the green structure of the future. Designed with an alien-like shape that looks like a combination between a sea shell and an urchin, the sculptural building harnesses tidal and solar energy to generate electricity.

Called the Hydroelectric Tidal House, this building was conceptualized for the Llandudno residential suburb of Cape Town, South Africa and it comprises two shells: a fixed, outer shell that anchors the home to the beach and a free-moving interior unit buoyed by the waves.

According to Inhabitat, the outer semi-circular shell attaches the house to the shoreline with sand foundations and is cast in concrete. Considering the abundant sunshine source Cape Town has to offer, the futuristic house will partially get its energy through the solar cells that line the outer shell. However, the structure will be primarily powered by the tidal energy source. To maximize the efficiency, its creator designed the shell with a porous structure.

Krasojevic’s concept also features an electromagnetic turbine system that uses neodymium magnets and copper wire coils to induce an electric current when the waves push and pull against the extruded chambers. This is why the inner floating shell is made from a lightweight non-ferrous aluminum structure, while the electric energy is captured in a capacitor.

So what's your dream house?
