Future Toyota Supra Rumored to Share Platform with BMW Z5

Toyota announced last year the beginning of a new partnership with BMW in order to expand their research on EV batteries fuel cells, CFRP production and last but not least, to jointly develop a new sportscar, just like it did with Subaru for the GT 86/BRZ.

Recently, we’ve understood that Toyota’s new chairman Takeshi Uchiyamada would like the new sportscar to be placed above the current GT 86 model and probably resurrect the Supra nameplate.

Latest rumors from German publication are telling that the upcoming Supra might share the same platform with the BMW Z5, an upcoming roadster to replace the current Z4 model.

As the Z5 will mostly be offered as a roadster, the Supra is more likely to get a coupe body and powered by an engine making about 211 to 367 HP developed by BMW. A hybrid powertrain is highly expected though, which could use the recently showcased Hybrid-R technology from Toyota.
