Daimler AG Chairman and epic-mustache man, Dieter Zetsche, recently had a chat with the Brits from Autocar about the future of smart cars.
During that conversation, the man in charge of everything the three-pointed star is related with, said that the future smart line-up will also include a small crossover-SUV which will not be based on any Mercedes-Benz model, as it was originally speculated.
Instead, the SUV will be based on the same rear engine and rear wheel drive platform that has been developed to be modular and scalable in size.
“It is the brand’s defining feature, a unique selling point that sets smart apart. There are no plans to adopt a more conventional front engine/front-wheel drive layout for a larger, additional model.” Zetsche said, as quoted by Autocar.
In other words, the new SUV will be a jacked-up smart forfour with more body armor and a tougher look, while its (supposedly) all-wheel drive system will be based on the rwd forfour/fortwo transmission.
Expect more reports and information about the new model after the pre-production testing spy-shots will start to pour in during the following year.
