Future Mercedes AMG Sport Range to Rival BMW M Performace, Audi S Models

In case you haven’t noticed, premium German carmakers’ performance divisions are making more money than ever these days, whether we’re talking actual go-fast models or just packages. Audi has been further speculating this for years with its S models, while BMW recently joined with its M Performance cars. Mercedes is now ready to join the “warm” performance bandwagon with what will be knows as AMG Sport models.

Earlier this year, we talked about the upcoming C 450 AMG Sport Estate, which will be the first of this new range, a breed that will obviously fill the gap between Mercedes’ normal creatures and those who are touched by Affalterbach’s magic wand.

In its traditional overengineering fetish manner, Mercedes will gift its AMG Sport models with quite some firepower. Let’s take the aforementioned C 450 as an example. This will be motivated by a new twin-turbo 3-liter engine. While the “400” models in Merc’s range, which also use such a unit, deliver 333 hp, the special model will see output raise to 367 hp. As for the torque, this will sit around 550 Nm (406 lb-ft).

This means that Audi’s aging 333 hp S4 Avant has a dark future, especially since the C 450 AMG Sport Estate also sports 4Matic badges. Still, Audi has been known for having the passion to dominate the segments it competes in when it comes to power, so the problem should be addressed by the future A4 generation, whose models should arrive in about one year from now.

When it comes to BMW, their best current effort is the 335i with M Performace parts, who takes its twin-scroll single-turbo 3.0-liter L6 to 320 hp. BMW is expected to release a 340 hp version of the engine, at least for the 4-Series Coupe, which could, in turn be touched by the M Performance division, either as a model per se or via the Performance Parts catalog.

Of course, this new German Power War will be fought on many other fronts. The new AMG Sport fever will include models belonging to the A, C, E and S-Class ranges, as well as take a deep dive in the crossover/SUV pool, with the GLA, GLK, M and GL models. The upcoming M-Class coupe will be no exception to this.

The idea is that you’d better start saving, as Mercedes dealerships will definetly have a performance variant for every wish in the future. As you can imagine, AMG Sport models won’t come cheap. For instance, the aforementioned C 450 AMG Sport Estate will start at around EUR 65,000 on the German market.
