Although Ford hasn't said too much about the V6 EcoBoost engine, rumors claiming that the newly-developed unit may be installed on the 2010 Fusion but we're still awaiting for confirmation from Ford. However, it may seem like the American carmaker is getting ready to unveil EcoBoost, according to the Detroit News citing sources close to the development process. Basically, EcoBoost will come under the form of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine which will be particularly focused on fuel economy but will also develop enough power.

EcoBoost is said to be Ford's first engine combining turbo-charging and direct fuel injection, which means the resulting engine would be capable of releasing maximum power within a small displacement engines.

"It's all about delivering the fuel economy customers want without sacrificing performance. The four-cylinder will deliver a good blend of both for customers,” Ford spokesman Said Deep told The Detroit News.

In addition to the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, the American carmaker is also developing a more powerful variant of this unit, namely a 3.5L V6 which, according to the same source, is due to be launched next summer on the 2010 Lincoln MKS.

Ford's interest in fuel-efficient engines is pretty understandable when looking at financial results where American carmakers record drops of more than 20 percent on all emerging markets. On the other hand, although they experience slight sale decreases, European models are still selling well, especially thanks to the fact that local manufacturers were focused on fuel efficiency and engine performance just from the beginning.

Moreover, the new EcoBoost may be regarded as a way to comply with the United States Senate requirements which demanded Detroit carmakers to concentrate on environmentally-friendly engines and fuel-efficient units in order to be eligible for the requested loan. However, everybody's still awaiting for some official specs, so keep an eye on autovolution to read them as soon as they're released.
