The Lexus LC 500 is joining the Buick Avista after receiving two prestigious awards at the 2016 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
The Japanese carmaker’s newest luxury coupe collected two accolades: 2016 EyesOn Design Award for Design Excellence - Production car and EyesOn Design Award for Design Excellence - Interior Design. This comes four years after winning the EyesOn Design best concept car award for the Lexus LF-LC Hybrid Sport Coupe.
“I am so honored to receive the EyesOn Design awards for best interior and design excellence for the LC 500 for our designer peers. The LC 500 is a clear result of the passion, hard work and collaboration between the designers and engineers for the future chapter of Lexus,” Tadao Mori, chief designer of the LC 500, stated.
The NAIAS 2016 EyesOn Design Awards are given to the best production and concept vehicles that make their worldwide debut at the well-known Detroit Auto Show.
The LC 500 was penned by Lexus Design in Toyota City, Japan, and it represents the future direction for Lexus design. The designers worked closely with engineers to take the LF-LC show car and make it a reality. The plan was to redefine the Lexus design style, yet remain within reach for luxury buyers.
With the launch of this new car, Lexus is planning to be a real competitor for Mercedes-Benz’s S-Class Coupe, and based on what we’ve seen, it has a high chance to accomplish that goal, despite being smaller.
Measuring 187.4 inches (4.76 meters) in length, the car is underpinned by a modular platform built from carbon fiber reinforced plastic, aluminum, and high-strength steel. The platform will be used by future Lexus models, including the new LS.
The LC 500 is powered by a 5.0-liter naturally-aspirated V8 providing 467 horsepower, linked to a ten-speed automatic gearbox, and is able to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Lexus’ new flagship coupe will start at under $100,000.
