At the end of May, the NHTSA and Takata Corp. declared to the media that 33.8 million vehicles are equipped with sub-standard airbag inflators made by the Japanese corporation. After Ford, Honda, Nissan and many more brands released statements on what nameplates are affected by the Takata mess-up, General Motors follows suit with 330,198 trucks.
According to the biggest of The Big Three, General Motors is informing that over 330 thousand pickup trucks need to have their Takata airbags swapped for safer units. The recall tally covers the 2007 and 2008 model year full-size Chevrolet Silverado heavy-duty and the GMC Sierra heavy-duty model.
These workhorses need to have their passenger-side airbag inflators replaced. Implementing Takata’s equipment recall from May 19th, 2015 (NHTSA recall number 15E-041), the campaign announced by General Motors LLC covers about 374,715 trucks in total if we include Canada and exports too.
General Motors isn’t aware of any crashes, injuries, fatalities or even complaints about humidity-related ruptures affecting the previously mentioned population of vehicles. In NHTSA’s recall notice, the consequence of moisture intrusion in those airbags is explained as follows: “the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants, potentially resulting in serious injury or death.”
If you own a 2007 - 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500HD or 2007 - 2008 GMC Sierra 2500/3500HD assembled from November 28th, 2006, to August 29th, 2008, you should be contacting your nearest dealer immediately. GM hasn’t yet provided a recall notification schedule, but affected owners can contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC at 1-800-462-8782.
