Porsche released a facelift of the 991 generation of the 911 last year, but the engineers of the company are already working on the next generation.
Our friends at SB-Medien have provided us with a set of spyshots of the mule of the 2018 Porsche 911. The prototype features wider front and rear wheel arches, made to accommodate a wider track.

The vehicle in the images also has various sensors and instruments fitted to its body, as well as a partial roll cage inside its cockpit.

According to previous information regarding the upcoming Porsche 911, the sports car will also be available with a hybrid powertrain, so the extended width of the vehicle could explain the necessity of the modifications done to the front and rear track.

Porsche did not specify what kind of hybrid drivetrain they will use for the upcoming 911 hybrid, but there’s still time for that until the new 911 comes to market.

The next-generation Porsche 911 is not expected to bring a design revolution for the German sports car. As you know, the Porsche brand is notorious for the minute changes they apply to the star of their portfolio. However, the 911 is expected to receive styling modifications here and there, but the essential elements of this model will remain unchanged.

The prototype spotted by our spy photographers is a mule in its early development phases. Most likely, Porsche is just testing the powertrain of the current 911 in the new configuration of the model. The wider track of the 911 will dictate changes to suspension and steering, so the engineers at Porsche will have some work ahead of them until they get ready to start testing the camouflaged body of the upcoming generation of the 911.

After all, the German sports car is famous for its handling, and the company must ensure that the next generation of the 911 raises the bar to the level expected by customers and fans.
