French Families Press Renault to Give Up Zoe Nameplate

Renault has already announced its plans to start production of the Zoe electric car but the company has encountered an unexpected problems. Several French families were angered by Renault's decision to market its new contraption under one of the most popular French names for baby girls.

Some of them even set up online petitions calling for support from other couples that feel the same. They want to join forces and convince Renault to give a different name to its electric range.

“Our daughters have a beautiful first name that must not be associated with a car, so let us unite to bring pressure on a multinational which is going to destroy this pretty name for our children,” a petition signed by Sébastien Mortreux, reads according to timesonline.co.uk. “It is a scandal that they are able to use common first names for products,” he said.

“I am shocked. It is completely wrong that Renault should take the name of a woman — of my daughter — for a car, a marketing product,” a user nicknamed Rebecca225 added.

Renault has already acknowledged the complaints and said that although the company might reconsider the Zoe nameplate in the future, it will probably be used for the new electric range after all.

“It is a name that evokes values of femininity, of youth, a playful spirit and vivacity,” said Valerian David, a Renault spokesman. “It is also a reference to the concept of zero emissions.”

Unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show, Renault Zoe ZE was described as "a zero-emission vehicle that also possesses a dynamic, edgy, attractive design".
