Well, it’s official. I mean, it was already official because Gasly was already under contract with AlphaTauri for 2023, but at least now we know for certain that he won’t ask to be let out of his deal in order to join any other team. Of course, anything beyond 2023 is a complete mystery. My money is still on either McLaren or Alpine for him, in the long term.
Still, his current team is absolutely delighted to keep him around for another season, which, in turn, should build continuity. AlphaTauri considers Gasly to be a hard-working driver and a proven race winner, with three podiums and three fastest race laps to date – he's amassed a total of 325 points in F1.
Currently, he is in eleventh place in the 2022 Driver Standings with just 16 points, but some of his poor results this year weren’t necessarily his fault.
“We are really pleased to confirm that Pierre stays with us in 2023,” said team principal Franz Tost. “He is definitely in the group of the best and most competitive drivers in F1 and has proven his abilities during all the time he has spent with us. Undoubtedly, Pierre can play a major role in the team having a successful season next year and it will be down to us to provide him with a competitive car, so that he can continue to deliver excellent results.”
We wouldn’t go as far as to say he’s in the same group as Verstappen, Leclerc, Russell or Norris, but the talent and the determination are there.
“I have been with this team for five years now and I am proud of the journey we’ve been through together and the progress we have made. I’m happy to remain with my Scuderia AlphaTauri team,” stated the Frenchman.
Gasly will take to the track next week (1-3 July) for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
