French Drivers Start the Fight Against New Traffic Regulations

Quite a stir, the French initiative to toughen the traffic law in the country has caused... The provisions of the new legislation, much harsher than the one currently in effect and adorned from place to place with the threat of jail, has finally managed to mobilize the French drivers.

According to The New York Times, led into an online battle by three companies that manufacture speed camera detectors, an army of displeased drivers is gathering and will soon march to say stop to the government's plans to ban camera detectors, fine those who own them and jail those who sell them. (At the time we're reporting this and in just three days, 128,564 hit the Like button on the group's Facebook page).

The group, which calls itself AFFTAC, has come up with an open letter for the prime minister which is to be printed, signed and sent to local authorities.

To remind you, France is currently working on a bill which is aimed directly at speeding drivers. Using a speed camera or radar detector would cost the driver EUR1,500 in fines and six penalty points, while selling one would land those who do an EUR30,000 fine and, in some cases, two years in prison.

The cherry on the cake, however, is that after they have taken away the tool that allowed to know where the speed traps are and slow down, the French authorities plan to really ruin the day of those caught well above the limit, with even three months of jail just around the corner for serious offenders.

French authorities call this all just another step towards making France's roads safer. Authorities say they have achieved a reduction of 47 percent in the country's road-death toll since the introduction of the speed cameras in 2002.
