Free EV Charging Stations from DTE

No, there is no typo in the title you read above. No less than 2,500 electric vehicle charging stations for homes will be handed by DTE Energy, for free, to buyers of plug-in hybrid vehicles.

DTE plans to give a boost to the incipient industry by ensuring the infrastructure needed for the task. The charging stations, 240-volt units, are available to the first 2,500 people who sign up for a charging plan by December 2013.

The offer comes in the form of a $2,500 discount from the price of the station (in most cases, that is the price of the respective hardware). DTE will make some money out of this deal by installing a separate meter which will be used to track the electricity used to charge the PEVs.

The company will come up with offers for PHEVs which will allow customers to recharge the Chevrolet Volt for instance at lower rates, during off-peak periods. The aforementioned meter takes into account the time-of-day rate that offers lower prices for energy used between 11 p.m. and 9 a.m. Monday through Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday. DTE will also offer a flat charging rate of $40 per month for up to 250 customers.

"The question isn't, 'Where can I recharge my PEV?' because it's now right there in your garage,
" said Trevor Lauer, DTE Energy vice president, Marketing & Renewables. "Our customers just need to decide what charging option meets their lifestyle needs and budget."

More details about the DTE offer can be obtained by visiting the company's stand at the North American International Auto Show.
