Talk about bad luck: one construction worker in Anaheim, California was minding his business, working on a construction site earlier this week, when a car crashed into his building equipment and he was hurled into an open manhole.
The victim fell more than 20 feet into the large open shaft, and first responders needed over an hour to get him out safely, using a harness, KTLA reports. He is believed to be in stable condition, after suffering “some muscoskeletal injuries” for which he’s receiving treatment at a local hospital, the media outlet says, citing Anaheim police Sgt. Luis Correa.
“The victim had been performing shoring work in preparation for sewer construction when a white Toyota Corolla slammed into equipment,” says the publication.
The driver, identified only as a male in his 20s, got out of the car right after the crash and tried to flee the scene. Police arrived immediately and fellow construction workers showed the officers where the Toyota Corolla driver had gone. He was apprehended almost a block away and was taken into custody.
The driver is now facing charges of “hit-and-run [and] having a suspended license,” but he also has several other outstanding warrants in his name, which would explain his initial reaction to run away from the crash he caused. “Investigators don't believe he was under the influence of any substance during the incident,” the same report says.
However, they’re still working to determine what caused the crash that the media has dubbed a “freak” accident. The report doesn’t say whether the driver remains in custody, if he’s been cooperating in the investigation, or if work safety standards had been followed at the construction site. On that last count, based on reports, it looks as if the sole responsible for the accident is the careless driver.
