Back in 2010, Audi dropped the quattro concept at the Paris Motor Show to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the famous car which most people associate with the brand. Unfortunately, nothing came of it, since the Germans couldn’t figure out where it would fit in the model range.
That concept was officially announced as being based on the RS5 body and shortened further still by 150mm in wheelbase with 40mm chopped from the roof. Power came from a 408 PS 2.5-liter turbo engine While that made it similar in proportion to the 80s original, it also left the car in Audi TT RS territory. Not good, not good at all!
It seems Audi finally figured out what it wants. A new quattro concept has been rumored to be headed to the Frankfurt Auto Show for a good few month now. German magazine Autobild has fresh info on this new concept which makes altogether more sense to us.
It seems Audi realized they don’t have a rival for the BMW 6 Series/M3 or the SL and are using the quattro to plug the gap. The new concept s based on the bigger A6 sedan platform and will be powered by a 600 horsepower version of the twin-turbo 4-liter V8 they use in the RS6, RS7 and with lower output in some S models as well. The new coupe we’ll be seeing in Frankfurt will apparently be 4.6 meters long, about a foot longer than before.
In addition, it will preview Audi’s new design language and will make extensive use of carbon fiber in order to wow the German crowd with its low 1,200kg weight.
