Just as we told you a few days ago, Mazda is showcasing the MX-5 Superlight concept at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The details are already known at this time but we finally got the chance to see the car in some new photos, other than the ones provided by the Japanese manufacturer last week.
So, as you know, the car comes with no windscreen, as the manufacturer tries to reduce the overall weight of the car and thus improve performance and fuel efficiency. The Superlight concept is powered by the same engine of the production version, namely a 1.8-liter unit which is capable of achieving better figures compared with the stock powerplant.
“I’ve dreamed of building a Mazda MX-5 with this kind of radical form for a long time,” said Peter Birtwhistle, Mazda Motor Europe’s chief designer, in a news release. “Now that weight reduction has become a dominant factor in automotive development, the time is ripe for it. We show how lightweight a car today can be.”
As for performance figures, the engine develops 126 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 167 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, which helps it achieve a fuel consumption rating of 6.3 l/100km (37.3 mpg). It releases 150 grams of CO2 per kilometer.
The MX-5 Superlight concept sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds. It comes equipped with 205/45 R17 tires and ventilated brake discs on the front and solid discs on the rear.
