Frank Williams to Push for Rosberg Extension

Linked with a move to McLaren a little over a year ago, Nico Rosberg now seems more determined than ever to take the future into his own hands and not let that chance slip away another time. The German driver, known to be one of the most promising young drivers of the new wave, made it very clear that he will leave Williams F1 if the Grove based team won't provide him win a winning car in 2009.

Being in his last year of contract with Frank Williams' team, Rosberg feels this season will be the closest he'll ever get to scoring his first F1 win with Williams F1. With the new regulations, the British outfit started the development of their 2009-spec car holding the same shots at getting it right as all other teams in the F1 paddock. If they fail, he'll be forced to look for a new team in 2010.

“This is the one big chance that Williams are going to get. If we don't get it right now we don't deserve to get it right. For me it's a crucial year,” said Rosberg, as reported by British newspaper The Daily Telegraph.

When offered the chance change Grove for Woking – following Fernando Alonso's departure from McLaren at the end of 2007 – the German sophomore (at the time) was guided by his father to stay as leading driver with Williams F1 rather than become Lewis Hamilton's lieutenant at McLaren. However, with only two podiums in his pocket throughout the 2008 season, Rosberg seems ready to move on. And old Frank seems to know it all to well...

“I understand that Mercedes would like a German driver and Nico is at the end of his contract this year. We will be sitting down to talk to him sooner rather than later. We would most certainly like to keep him,” Williams allegedly told The Daily Express.

The 2009 season will also mark Heikki Kovalainen's last year of contract with McLaren Mercedes.
