France Ruling Out EVs from “Green” Car Class, Says the Term is Misleading

The world has gone crazy with green cars now, be them average mild hybrids or fully electric ones, which makes the topic here. Everyone considers that getting an EV will automatically transform them into planet savers by not burning fossil fuel and cutting the emissions. False! And France is the first country to put a limitation on the word “green” to stop misleading people.
If you recall, Paris is one of the most air polluted cities in France and councils are currently trying to solve the problem by limiting the speed and encouraging people to use mass transportation instead taking their cars to work.

And just along with the campaign, Renault rolled some new adverts for its Zoe EV around town saying “To fight pollution, drive a car”, making people believe that the mass transport solution sucks, and they should buy an EV and rest assured.

Although an EV is “greener” than an average fuel-burning car, they still have a carbon print. No, they really don’t emit anything during use, but if you trace the problem to its root, you’ll find out that their build process still emits CO2.

Battery packs and other consumables you’ll be using in the EV’s lifetime are all made using energy that mostly comes from burning fossil fuels. So there you go - while your car won’t pollute the town, the factory will do it for the surroundings thanks to you as a customer supporting it through buying an EV.

And that explains why France’s Jury of Advertising Ethics (JDP) has recently ruled that electric cars cannot be advertised as being planet saviors anymore. The decision was taken following a complaint from the Association of National Federation of transport users associations in March.

A similar ruling has been also issued against car-sharing services around Paris advertising their business and vehicles as ecologic/clean means of transportation.

Well, guess that the only true way to go green for now is to start pedaling.
